Do I Need an Ecological Survey for My Development?
Do all developments need an ecological survey?
Not every development requires the same level of ecological assessment. Whether you need an ecological survey depends on the individual site, the proposed development, and the requirements of the local planning authority.
A planning authority may request an ecological survey as part of a planning application if a development could affect habitats, protected species or other ecological features. Understanding these requirements early can help ensure you provide the appropriate ecological information when applying for planning permission.
When might an ecological survey be needed?
An ecological survey may be required where a site has existing habitats or protected species that development could affect.
For example, a proposed housing development on a site containing mature trees, hedgerows, ponds or areas of grassland may require an ecological assessment to identify habitats and determine whether protected species could be present.
Depending on the findings of an initial assessment, we may recommend further protected species surveys. Ecological requirements vary depending on the site and the type and scale of development.
Why should you check early?
It is important to ecology early in the planning process. Some ecological surveys are seasonal, so ecologists can only carry them out at certain times of the year. Identifying potential ecological constraints early can help avoid delays to a planning application.
Early ecological advice can also help inform a development’s design, identify opportunities to protect existing habitats and support biodiversity enhancements. Where applicable, ecological assessments can also help inform Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) requirements.
How can ACJ help
ACJ ecology provides ecological services to support developments through the planning process. Our services include Preliminary Ecological Appraisals (PEAs), protected species surveys and Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) assessments and plans.
If you are unsure whether your development requires an ecological survey, contact our experienced ecologists for advice on the appropriate ecological surveys and assessments for your project.
Getting the right ecological advice early can help you understand potential ecological constraints and ensure your planning application has the information it needs.
