Biodiversity Net Gain: Shaping a Sustainable Future
With the recent implementation of mandatory Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) in the UK, developers are now required to ensure that new projects contribute positively to local biodiversity. This pioneering legislation aims to halt the decline in species abundance and support the recovery of nature.
What is Biodiversity Net Gain?
Biodiversity Net Gain is a principle that ensures development leaves the natural environment in a better state than it was before. From January 2024, major developments in England must deliver at least a 10% increase in biodiversity. This involves creating or enhancing habitats within or around the development site.
Recent Updates
Guidance for Practitioners: A new comprehensive guide has been released to help developers and planners navigate BNG requirements, covering all stages from pre-purchase to post-construction (IEMA).
Digital Tools: New digital services, including biodiversity credits estimators and metric calculation tools, have been launched to simplify the BNG compliance process for developers (Natural England).
Extended Requirements: Starting April 2024, smaller development sites will also be required to meet BNG standards, ensuring that all scales of development contribute to biodiversity enhancement (GOV.UK).
Tree Planting Initiatives: Recent guidance emphasizes the importance of integrating tree planting into development projects, highlighting the numerous ecological and social benefits of maintaining mature trees (Forestry Commission).
